Winter '11 Anime Atmosphere

Hey guys, first post of the year from Yuzuru desu~!!  And I will talk about …. Of course, the new anime season!  Cus I really wanna get it out there: this is one WEIRD season.  Y’know, sometimes it’s really quite easy to grasp the overall atmosphere of a season when several series share a similar theme: ex. last season there was Kuragehime and OreImo and KamiShiru, which were all sort of satiric works that reflect the otaku culture.  In this season, we have Puella Magi Magica Madoka and Yumekui Merry, both of which are about dreams and chaos and lack of reason.  They both feel really …… creepy *shivers.*  The only upside is that Kalafina, one of my favorite J-groups, is gonna get a LOT of air time doing the BGMs and ED for Magica Madoka XDD

Puella Magi Magica Madoka’s plot synopsis said “Magical Girl Madoka Magica is an original anime television series to be produced by SHAFT and Aniplex. It will be directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, character designs by Aoki Ume with Takahiro Kishida doing character designs adaptation and screenplay written by Gen Urobuchi. Music will be composed by Yuki Kajiura.”  Which basically is not a plot synopsis at all =P  But seriously.  “Magical Girl” usually refers to kiddy girly stuff with wands and comical enemies and pantsu shots.  But this one is way out of the league.  The character design is simple and cute, maybe even TOO simple.  In contrast, the plot immediately starts off the deep end: the main character gets a warning “if you wish to maintain your lifestyle, never change who you are,” the main character meets a girl that she wanted to help in a dream, but who seems to be after her life IRL, reality distorts itself into random images like the OP animation from Psychic Academy, the “enemies” seem to use some weird language, and a prominent usage of chains in the animation.  Well, there still is a “normal” magical girl transformation scene, but still, this series is really creepy.  Especially since Kajiura is doing the BGM.

Yumekui Merry’s plot synopsis said “Ten years ago Fujiwara noticed he had a power to see multicolored auras surrounding the person’s body. Ever since then he’s been having a weird dream about a war with cats. Then one day a mysterious girl falls on top of him…”  I honestly though, oh, it’s a mix of To Love-ru with Mayoi Neko Overrun or something (btw both of those series are by the same mangaka =D), so I was expecting general average ecchi comedy and stuff.  But ~~noooo~~ that’s too normal~~~ so what it turns out to be is a separate dream/town where there is an army of cats acting cool and there are giant floating fish skeletons and a a big buff boss cat that looks stupid and cool fighting scenes.  From the little that I’ve seen, it now seems more like Soul Eater-style.  Mysterious and creepy and awesome action scenes.

GOSICK, the first ep of which has yet to be aired yet, is sorta similar, based on the manga.  It’s also gonna be mysterious and cryptic, but leaning more towards a detective/mysteries sort of plot line.

Still, I’m really taken by surprise by this season’s mood.  Never would have imagined it in my wildest dreams.  Not sure I like it.  Not sure I particularly dislike either, though.  Gotta wait and see how everything pans out =D
